Why does one need a Bible? Why does one need a car? Why does one need a baseball bat? Why does one need a kitchen knife? Because this is America. You are asking the wrong question. It is not, "why do you need?" the question is, "why would you want to trample on someone's rights?" You may not like guns. I may not like SUVs. Someone else may not like Bible's. The Constitution says it is my right to have one. That is why I choose to have one.

for adequate security of life and property.therefore,if government of a particular country can enssure and approve that the citizens should be use handgun it will be a great previledge and source of conviniency for the police and even the government.soo, its not a bad thing if the citizens are keeping gun.that is my opinion

Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my gun!
Guns are like religion and lifestyle. It's a very personal choice to make whether YOU choose to own, or practice, or not. Nobody is forcing to exercise your right to do either. Not yet, fortunately. I don't see why I'd have to justify my "need" to own a gun or practice any brand of religion, and neither should any other self-respecting, free American.
It is about choice! The fiery liberal-minded(mindless?) of this country will sure speak volumes about this[right of choice] when it comes to abortion, yet continue to turn shamelessly hypocritical when it comes to the right of self-defense. When will the madness stop? Same goes to those "pro-life" terrorists of America.
Guns kill? Of course they can. So does abortion. I say we all get off each others backs for ALL our sake and respect each other's choice to live [within the law of the land] as he/she sees fit. In the end, we're all answerable for our actions to a higher power anyway.

Hi all, I was born in the 40's..Back then guns were a way of life..Alot of father, son bonding happened in the field hunting.I owned my first gun when I was 8 yrs. old. A Daisy bb gun (no,not a Red Ryder0.I was taught the peoper way to handle firearms and enjoyed a Saturday morning class that the local police held teaching the proper handling and care of firearms.I can understand why the police today are reluctant to even approach children.Everyone has a gun.Sadly alot of young americans die because they are ignorant to the fact that the police are your friend, not to be feared. As a child we knew that if you were lost or had a problem ask an officer and he would help you. Todaya child can't approach a policeman without concern on the officers part as to whether he or she is armed. I think it all goes back to the first child who was abused at home.He went to the police and the parents were arrested. They probably deserved it but it set a precident and kids to this day pull it like a gun.To sum it up. My opinion, bring paddles back to the school,if your child needs spanked,do it without fear of jail time.. I guess what I'm saying is,guns are a work of art and if treated with respect they will protect and put food on the table..If you get hit hard enough by the painting of Mona Lisa that could kill you too ! Have a nice day..Jeepster

If you want to eliminate handguns, are we to elimate baseball bat, knives, electical cords, leg of lamb, a car, a truck, buses - they can all be used to kill someone! If you remove guns then the criminals have nothing to fear. It has been shown that places with tough anti gun laws have a large increase of criminal activity because they don't have to wonder "does this person have a gun?"
It is my right to own a gun just as much as it is your right to not own a gun. Every dictator removes the guns from the people so they can't over throw them.
Comment #11 from jackhy on Jan, 20, 2006, 11:37 PST [reply]
I echo comment #3 completely! If handguns are banned than only criminals will own them. Handgun registration is for the honest sportsman and gun owner--criminals do not register weapons.
Comment #12 from chuckit on Jan, 21, 2006, 18:38 PST [reply]
i strongly belive that banning guns is not the ansewer, we have gun laws now that are not inforced, so why add more. guns don't kill - pepole kill.
just like in a DUI, it was not the ford or chevy, coors or bud, it was the person DOING the driving.
Comment #13 from vision77 on Jan, 30, 2006, 06:10 PST [reply]
why does one need a gun,it is not education,it is not food so it can be on the table,it is not life so you can live happy, one might say to protect a home but their are many ways to do so,you might have kid's in side and it dangerious.but remember gun's don't kill people, people kill people.
Comment #14 from qz3 on Feb, 03, 2006, 09:58 PST [reply]
Why does one need a gun??? Because it takes police ten minutes to respond to a 9-1-1 call. Besides, since when is anyone required to explain themselves when it comes to buying something? You really want to save lives? Work to lower the national speed limit to 10 MPH. Build cars that don't go faster than that.
Comment #15 from qz3 on Feb, 03, 2006, 11:30 PST [reply]
Haven't we seen that laws that attempt to restrict inanimate objects like booze and drugs tend to have the opposite effect? These kind of laws create black markets, new classes of criminals, smuggling, give rise to violence, and in the end cause more problems than they solve?

There are 16 comments and not one touches on why the Founding Fathers thought it was so important that it was the second amendment in the Bill of Rights. A natural right given by the creator that no one can change or alter. These rights were already in the Constitution but since so many had died for freedoms, and knowing what power does to men, they had to make an additional safeguard so there would be no way of misunderstanding it. (Did not work cause they cannot even figure out the "N" and the "O" in no law.

In any case, for the government if given the chance would always try to rule the People. Now the only way make sure the government feared the people and think twice about for example what we are facing right now, was to keep the citizens armed and for the citizens to have their own militias.

If anyone remembers Katrina and the little old lady that bravely got her gun cause she knew those people could not come into her home. Well they threw her on the floor, took her from a roof over her head and stuck her in the back of a van.

We watched this on TV and Americans accepted it. It was bad storm blah blah blah.

In front of our eyes like cattle, the citizens were being horded out and there were dead in the thousand. More then all the other cities put together. There were also 4500 "displaced" nowhere to be found. They must have all had Alzheimer’s because we have phones. The told us about the violence, the killer water, the cat 5 storm and none of it was true.

They surrounded the city, got a judge to issue a zero access and then proceeded to do what has never been done. Get a court to say that the all the citizens had to give up their guns.

They confiscated everyone's gun. Which is what massive law enforcement and even foreign forces would do if you were about to take the city and its citizens to get cleanse it.

That is why we have guns. Because the criminals are not the danger. The government hypes that and has imported massive, huge amounts of drugs. So, who is dangerous? The criminals or the government. Drug dealers and crack addicts only exist because our government is the top echelon for the source.

Afghanistan had stopped their opium production under the Taliban. Now they are back.

We have an unimpeachable government. ...They are selling us Iran as we speak. They are going to go nuclear and the dust alone will kill our own troops....ours....in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are killing them already because they are using weapons that have WMD in them ...in other words they are using shells with depleted uranium. The stuff lives for 45 billion years and creates a dust you cannot see.

This is what we are saying they will do to us.

Who is going to defend us on American soil? The same people that protected the pentagon after 50 minutes and two RSVPs hitting really tall building on national TV..... And 50 minutes later, a plane penetrated the most protected air space on the planet?

So assuming we get attacked again once, and our troops are falling ill because of radiation who is going to protect the people when we are invaded? We are at war so why does that seem so crazy. Being the first county to use nukes will make us target practice and we will have so many enemies, that no way could you know where the threat will come from.]

Nuking is a big deal and yet the news treats it like, as if there is no difference with conventional weapons.

There is real chance that the people will up rise too. No one in their right mind can swallow this man attacking yet another country even when they do not know what the Downing Street memo is.

Fema can jail21 million Americans and last year 800 camps were built. He has his patriot act.

I never thought I would utter these words. I thought it was nut jobs that said these thing. That is what the black propaganda tells us. Only crazy people believe that our leaders care for our freedom.

When I found out that we censored news, and that censorship according the world book encyclopedia is typical of a dictatorship, I was shell shocked...there was no way.

The news is not news and that is all I needed to know that we are not free.

That is why you need a gun. I am poor but I would buy as many as I could afford and give them away as gifts if I could afford it along with a history class.

Remember the American Revolution was fought mainly by citizens using their own guns.

Cool huh? Now we just get retarded with killer Television that thinks going nuclear is the same as switching from Charmin to bounty.

This man has them on planes on ready alert flying over us right now and oh....Prescott bush his grandfather lost his business for giving aid to the enemy ...HITLER!

WE HAVE LITTLE BABY BUSH NAZIS IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND IN THE SUNSHINE STATE FOR GOVERNOR

I don't believe the use of hand guns should become illegal as much as I believe their use needs to be regulated. Illegal distribution of these guns needs to be monitored. I'm not opposed to personal ownership of handguns as much as I'm opposed to them ending up in the hands of those with criminal intent. Naturally, there is no miracle solution to this problem, but there are measures that should be taken to ensure that these weapons don't end up in possession of the wrong people.
In response to one comment about "Why should we own hand guns? Why should we own bibles..." I think it's extreme to compare the two. Owning a Bible isn't a threat to the lives of others. Other weapons are just as life-threatening to people, but to me it's about who is holding the weapon. That's what I would like to see change.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed. Nuff said.

What a polarizing topic this one is.

I grew up in rural Mississippi and owned guns all of my life. As a boy, I would regularly go out and hunt. This was a great bonding experience with my father and uncle. I also served in the military and was trained on quite a few weapon systems. So, I do have a great deal of experience with guns. I personally think that people should be able to own guns for the following reasons:

-Second Amendment grants the right for militias to defend the security of a free State
-Hunting and firearms are a deep rooted part of our national identity
-Recreation
-Self protection

With that being said, I do not think that handguns or semiautomatic/automatic weapons should be legal. These types of weapons are purely designed for the purpose of killing human beings.

Handguns are so dangerous due to their ability to be concealed. You don’t need a concealed weapon to guard your home/free State or to hunt. A rifle works just as well.

I have lived in two of the most dangerous cities in America (New Orleans and Oakland, CA). In Oakland, a 10 year old boy was shot and killed in front of my house, a victim of gang violence. I believe that the argument that an “armed nation is a polite nation” is a false notion. Look at Afghanistan and Iraq. Both countries are very well armed and very dangerous. The possibility of having a concealed weapon is not an adequate deterrent to stop someone else from using a gun. The propagation of more concealable weapons just adds to the probability that they will be used.

The thousands of losses of innocent fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, students, and children each year is a tragedy in our country. I strongly think that we should study the gun violence statistics from other countries (Great Brittan and Australia) that have taken measures to eliminate handguns.

Great Britain is creating a provision for the use of guns by the police force because of the rapid escalation in violent crimes with a gun. In Britain, 37% of all violent crimes occur at a person's place of residence compared with <5% in America.

Australia has had a rapid escalation in violent crimes involving the use of a gun over the last couple years at a rate of nearly 200% per year.

You're right - let's just take a look at how well that is working.
Comment #23 from jruff on Nov, 24, 2007, 17:19 PST [reply]
Some of the people here are,umm....... over caffeinated (mostly comment#17).

But anyway, Comment# 22 is the most relevant and educated.
I would support a law banning handguns, if I felt that it would illiminate everyone from having a handgun. Sadly, I know it would not. Prohibition and the War on Drugs are good examples of what happens. Outlawing these items will only remove them from the hands of the law abiding. It will also make criminals out of those who choose to hold out on this law. The black market on such items would expand and gun related crime would go up. Statistics and history show this. A criminal by definition is unlawful.
Eliminating handguns will not prevent murder, either. Where there's a will, there's a way. If you want to kill someone you can strangle them, stab them, poison them, beat them to death, and/or etc.
If they want to eliminate accidental death, why don't they teach gun safety at school. They seem to think it will help with safe sex and drug use?
Comment #24 from munchkin21 on May, 06, 2008, 08:06 PDT [reply]
Those of you who say "because its my right I have a gun", are stupid. Just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean you have to do it. If you had the right to kill someone would you do it? If you had the right to drink and drive does that mean you will go and do it? Just becasue you are able to do something does not mean that you have to. Having guns in the world just increases the chances of more gun violence. HADGUNS SHOULD BE OUTLAWED!!!
